The moment is ripe to alter Manchester United's formation - Ruben Amorim declares.

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes was among seven senior stars absent from the holiday period victory against Newcastle.

Boss Ruben Amorim says that altering Man Utd's tactical system due to media noise would have meant "the end" for him.

In a first against Newcastle, Amorim ditched his usual back three setup with wide defenders and opted to field an standard back four shielded by two central midfielders.

By his own admission this effectively became a six-man defensive block in the closing phase as his side clung on for a win - securing just their second clean sheet of the campaign.

While he once notably stated that not even the highest authority could compel him to adjust his approach, Amorim insists the option to experiment with alternative setups has consistently been part of his long-term vision.

Nevertheless, he stresses he could only make the switch when his team were doing sufficiently well - lest it would look as if he was succumbing to outside noise.

"At the time I came here the previous campaign, I recognized perhaps I don't have the squad to perform effectively in that formation, but it was the start of a process," he commented.

"Our aim was to forge an philosophy. Today is a different time. We don't have a lot of personnel, and we have to adjust, so they see the reason we are switching things up.

"It is not because of the pressure of you guys, or the supporters.

"Whenever the press talk about altering the system constantly, I can't change because the players will think I'm altering things because of external voices and I think that is the end for the manager.

"When we are getting results in our system, then is the opportunity to adapt.

"This will help us develop into a stronger squad because when our full complement of personnel are back, we are not planning to use a back three all the time."

Injury Challenges Persist

Having just two wins in their last eight outings before beating Newcastle, it is debatable whether Amorim is correct to claim his side have been playing well.

He is, however, working with a severely stretched squad, with multiple first-team stars already unavailable for the upcoming home game against winless Wolverhampton Wanderers.

That number will grow if midfielder Mason Mount fails to recover the knock that forced his withdrawal from the Newcastle game at the interval.

Captain Bruno Fernandes is one of those who will miss the Wolves match, despite the fact he is understood to be pressing his boss to allow him to return following his hamstring problem.

"Bruno is already insisting he has to practice," revealed Amorim. "But there is absolutely no possibility he is going to feature against Wolves. Definitely not. You can write that."

The Captain's Leadership Remains

However, the Portuguese star will probably continue to be deeply engaged, as while most unavailable stars view matches from the stands, Fernandes was spotted keeping a close eye on the warm-ups from the mouth of the tunnel before the Newcastle game.

Amorim anticipates his leader to carry on offering insight.

"He is a natural leader," he stated. "He cannot be the type of player that when he is absent, he's silent and offering advice. He's always speaking. That's why he's the captain.

"He has bad things sometimes - the way he moves his arms - but he has a lot of strengths. Even after he recovers, he goes to watch the rest of the squad practicing. There are a lot of things you don't see.

"I'm not sure if he wants my position or not, but he's a leader. The guy is a true captain."

Recovery Timeline for Key Personnel

While the precise timeline for the captain's comeback - and that of other unavailable stars like Kobbie Mainoo, Matthijs de Ligt, and Harry Maguire - is unknown, before the conclusion of January, the club will see the return of Noussair Mazraoui, Amad Diallo, and Bryan Mbeumo from international duty.
