A minimum of 13 people perish and 98 injured in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the speed and management of the country's major government projects.

The crash happened on the Interoceanic Train, a line constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We will meticulously determine the reasons behind this incident,” affirmed the head of state.

The official reported that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The president stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the previous administration, whose presidency finished the prior year. This project was closely associated with his administration's economic goals for the southern region.

Another ambitious train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The building of both train projects was managed by the army, marking a significant expansion of its duties in public infrastructure. They were executed at an accelerated pace, beating forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that government.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also sparked persistent questions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This involves an earlier accident this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a key rival party demanded an prompt pause in the development and management of all such projects.

This halt was suggested while awaiting a full technical review. The party stated that the loss of life "demands swift accountability."

In reply, the president asserted that the train had been functioning in full adherence to all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the construction and operation of these national initiatives.
